Studio brandherm + krumrey interior architecture designs offices and other international projects. For the 2016 ORGATEC, the studio conceptualised the special area “The smart Coworking Lobby”. A conversation with Sabine Krumrey about the underlying concept, new demands on the working environment and the trade fair as creative platform.

Mrs Krumrey, what concept is concealed behind the special area “The Smart Coworking Lobby” at the 2016 ORGATEC?

It is a new office concept. The curator is Michael O. Schmutzer, founder of Design Offices, for whom we have redefined his office worlds for years. Together we demonstrate the importance of a shared place in the working environment. Here, not only the technologies are “smart”, but, first of all, the environment, the design as well as the way of responding to various working methods. The concept can be implemented anywhere – no matter how large or small the office building is. With this approach, “lobby” manifests the character of an area: communication, teamwork, transformation, information, creativity etc. are focus areas to which we thereby give a platform.

Your own work priorities include the design of office projects. What developments do you as an interior designer currently observe?

In fact, almost everything is changing. Starting with the way a request is made and the consequent planning. Today, workplaces are not “simply” planned, but instead concepts are developed – together with the employees and team leaders in workshops and studies. The individual solution is at least as important as designing with variables. Employees and the particularities of generation-spanning work methods are incorporated in the planning even more. The result is a symbiosis of experience and a fresh way of thinking. For this purpose, interiors have to be designed differently.

What importance do you attach to ORGATEC as the leading international trade fair for modern working environments? How do you exploit the trade fair for your own work?

The ORGATEC has been an important platform for the trends of modern working worlds for years. We are continually dealing with new products and innovations on the furniture market, and here we are able to gather this information in a sophisticated way. Besides working on office projects, we are also active in the fields of hotel and healthcare. In Cologne, we find impulses for all of these segments. We are committed to learn from various sources and transform them for the respective requirements – and in doing so we always want to be one step ahead.
